Course Content

  • Familiarity with the Building Regulations, including Part P (where applicable), and other legislation relevant to EV installations.
  • Electrical Principles and Circuit Design for EV Charging
  • Principles of electrical theory related to EV charging equipment, including load management and demand calculation.
  • Understanding circuit requirements and design considerations for different installation types (domestic, commercial, industrial).
  • Types of EV Charging Equipment and Installation Locations
  • Overview of various types of EV charging equipment and their suitability for different locations.
  • Site assessment to determine appropriate charging equipment and installation techniques.
  • Installation Procedures for EV Charging Equipment
  • Step-by-step installation procedures for EV chargers, including cable selection, protective devices, and mounting.
  • Techniques for safely installing and securing EV charging points in diverse settings.
  • Testing, Inspection, and Commissioning of EV Chargers
  • Carrying out the initial verification, testing, and commissioning of EV charging equipment.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through:

  • Written Knowledge Test – A test covering regulations, installation procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Practical Assessment – Hands-on installation, testing, and commissioning of EV charging equipment to demonstrate practical skills and understanding.
 

Entry Requirements

Candidates are typically expected to have a relevant electrical qualification, such as a Level 3 electrical installation certificate or equivalent, as well as experience in electrical installations. A basic understanding of BS 7671 and electrical inspection and testing is also recommended.

 

Progression

This qualification enables electricians to carry out EV charger installations in compliance with industry standards, a skill increasingly in demand as EV usage grows. Candidates may go on to specialise further in renewable energy installations or pursue additional qualifications in electrical inspection and testing.

Prerequisites

This qualification is aimed at experienced and practicing electrical operatives. On application for the qualification, the Approved Centre will carry out an Initial Assessment of the learner’s capability to complete the qualification.
Learners holding the following will confirm their suitability to enrol on the qualification.

Level 3 Electrotechnical vocational qualification which includes the initial verification and certification of electrical installations, and a

BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (current edition) qualification.
Learners not holding the above qualifications, will be required to provide evidence to the Approved Centre of suitable alternative qualifications and/or provide confirmation of their related work experience, skills and knowledge of current electrical regulations. This evidence must be documented and retained by the Approved Centre.
