The LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems is designed for appropriately qualified electrical professionals who want to develop specialist skills in Solar PV installation and maintenance.

Throughout the course, you'll develop your understanding of PV technology, system components, relevant requirements, system design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and fault finding.

Practical training covers areas including PV modules, mounting systems, electrical connections, inverters, testing and commissioning, helping you understand how small-scale Solar PV systems are installed and maintained safely and effectively.

Specialist renewable training for electricians: this qualification builds on existing Level 3 electrical competence and current BS 7671 knowledge. It is not an entry-level electrical course.

5. Entry Requirements

Before registration, learners must provide evidence of both:

  • A current Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671, commonly known as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • A recognised Level 3 electrotechnical qualification, apprenticeship qualification, experienced-worker qualification or accepted equivalent.

Accepted qualifications may include:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment.
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services – Electrical Installation or Maintenance.
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Apprenticeship Qualification.
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification.
  • Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification.
  • Building Services Engineering Level 3 Electrotechnical Installation Qualification.
  • SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF Level 7.
  • Other equivalent qualifications accepted under the current EAS Qualifications Guide.

Alternatively, applicants may provide a current ECS Gold Card issued by the JIB or SJIB in one of the following occupations:

  • Installation Electrician.
  • Approved Electrician.
  • Maintenance Electrician.
  • Domestic Electrician.

Important eligibility information

This is not an entry-level electrical qualification. All qualification evidence must be checked and approved by Kelly Energy Training before registration.

6. Assessment

Assessment includes both written and practical elements.

The written assessment checks your understanding of Solar PV technology, system design, installation requirements, commissioning, maintenance and related technical knowledge.

You'll also complete a practical assessment demonstrating your ability to apply appropriate installation, testing and commissioning procedures to a Solar PV system.

The assessment checks both your technical understanding of Solar PV systems and your ability to apply that knowledge in practice.

7. Where can this qualification lead?

Solar PV training can help appropriately qualified electricians develop a specialist skillset in the installation and maintenance of small-scale renewable generation systems.

Solar PV, Battery Storage and EV Charging can work together as part of a wider low-carbon electrical system. They are separate specialist areas, however, and there is no compulsory order in which electricians must complete the training.
