Core Course Content:CCN1 – Core Domestic Gas Safety

• The CCN1 course provides the fundamental knowledge and skills required for working safely with gas in domestic settings. It covers:

Gas Legislation and Standards:

• Understanding the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations.
• Reviewing industry standards and codes of practice, including Health and Safety at Work Act requirements for gas operatives.

Combustion, Ventilation, and Flues:

• Principles of gas combustion, including the characteristics of complete and incomplete combustion.
• Ventilation requirements for gas appliances to ensure safe operation.
• Correct installation and operation of flues to prevent carbon monoxide hazards.

Gas Safety Controls and Procedures:

• Understanding gas safety controls and how they operate.
• Procedures for gas tightness testing, purging, and dealing with emergency situations.

Installation and Commissioning of Gas Appliances:

• Safe installation practices, including positioning, securing, and commissioning appliances.
• Procedures for carrying out initial and ongoing safety checks on gas appliances.

Using Testing Equipment: 

• Operation of gas detection equipment and testing tools, such as manometers and leak detection fluid.
• Ensuring accurate readings for pressure, flow rates, and tightness tests.

Identifying and Responding to Unsafe Situations:

• Recognising common faults and unsafe situations in gas installations.
• Procedures for shutting off appliances and issuing warning notices if required.

Practical Assessment and Examination:

• Hands-on assessment of core skills, including gas safety checks, appliance isolation, and safe operation.
• Written examination to confirm knowledge of regulations, safety controls, and gas installation principles.
• Upon completion of the CCN1 core module, candidates can choose from the following appliance-specific modules based on their area of work:

MET1 – Domestic Gas Meters:

• The MET1 module focuses on the safe installation, maintenance, and testing of gas meters in domestic settings.

It covers: Meter Installation and Positioning:

• Proper positioning and securing of gas meters, including requirements for meter boxes.

Tightness Testing and Purging Meters:

• Conducting safe tightness tests on meter installations to prevent leaks.

Pressure Regulation and Meter Settings:

• Setting and adjusting pressure regulators for accurate meter readings.

CKR1 – Domestic Cooking Appliances:

• The CKR1 module is designed for those installing and servicing domestic gas cooking appliances, such as cookers and ovens.

It covers: Safe Installation and Connection:

• Procedures for safe connection of cookers and ovens to the gas supply.
• Ventilation and Flue Requirements Ensuring adequate ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide hazards.
• Testing and Commissioning of Cooking Appliances Initial testing, commissioning, and safe operation checks on gas cooking appliances.

HTR1 – Gas Fires and Wall Heaters:

• The HTR1 module provides the skills needed for working with domestic gas fires and heaters. It covers:

• Proper positioning and securing of gas fires and wall-mounted heaters.

Flue and Ventilation Requirements:

• Ensuring correct installation of flues and ventilation for safe appliance operation.

Commissioning and Testing of Heaters Procedures:

• for commissioning, testing, and ongoing maintenance of gas fires and wall heaters.

CENWAT – Domestic Central Heating Boilers and Water Heaters:

The CENWAT module is for those working with central heating boilers and water heaters.

It covers: Installation of Boilers and Water Heaters:

• Safe installation practices for domestic central heating boilers and water heaters.
• Flueing and Ventilation Requirements Ensuring that boilers and water heaters have appropriate flues and ventilation to prevent combustion issues.
• Testing, Commissioning, and Maintenance Conducting initial tests, commissioning, and regular maintenance for boilers and water heaters to ensure efficiency and safety.

Assessment

• Each module involves the following assessments:
• Written Exam – Testing knowledge of gas safety regulations, appliance-specific installation practices, and fault recognition.
• Practical Assessment – Hands-on demonstration of skills in installing, testing, and maintaining gas appliances in line with industry standards.

Certification

• Upon successful completion of the CCN1 core module and any chosen appliance-specific modules (such as MET1, CKR1, HTR1, or CENWAT), operatives receive certification from LCL Awards, which is valid for five years.
• This qualification is essential for working on domestic gas installations in the UK and is recognised by the Gas Safe Register. Course Duration The re-assessment course typically takes one to two days, depending on the module(s) selected, and includes both theoretical learning and practical assessments.
